The time between the years...
often finds us disorientated, even a little edgy, jumping like yoyos between excitement, merriment and Blues, anticipation, elation, flatness and even a meaning crisis and back to yet something else. Our usual full-to-the-brim life and hectic rhythm has pretty much seized to exist, and there it is, this window of opportunity, this time of possibility to finally attend to all the people and projects we have longed to be with, that we have rarely visited in the last year and have promised this precious time to. And suddenly I have a mental list a mile long of all the people I want to spend time with, the places in nature that all year I wanted to visit, the creative projects that I had put aside, the envisioning about the year ahead, and then there is also the damn tax return! And there….the time between the years grows into a an edgy thing that has me swing between some very chilled out days with my partner and cat, bumbling happily along into the short days and then a panic that now that I have let go my reigns I will never be able to ever work again and juggle all my projects and various hats- is this just me or does any of this sound familiar?
Then suddenly I remembered that these are after all the ‘Rauhnächte’, the ‘rough nights’, the nights when the wild and wonderful old, European dark Percht rides with her wild hair and wild hounds over the country and creates havoc- she is the stirrer, the wild one and supporter of all who seek their wild, expansive, untamed Selves- she hates all domesticity, is known to break dishes, tear down washing lines when people dare to attend to those chores in this, yes, holy time! She reminds us that this time is one in which we need to let go of our too closely held reigns, allow chaos, go inside and then out again, let things hang out and let other things go, shuffle the deck anew and see what it will bring up for us in the new year: a time also for divination and remembering our roots, our ancestors.
Percht is still on the lose until the 6th of January, and so I invite you to pay attention to her energies in this time! Maybe in your envisionings, dreams, thoughts, affirmations, resolutions and hopes for the New Year you can also let her in: expansive, wild, untamed energy.
I know that if I don’t invite her I become a very good girl who attends to all her chores but becomes stale and worn out very quickly. Yes, Percht makes me feel disorientated but then I believe like Anne Bogart says: ‘Every great project begins with disorientation’; and isn’t a new year a beautiful new great project, a magnificent blank canvas !?
I myself will make a collage for my new year ahead, I like it’s playful form and process.
And if you want to give yourself a treat and feel you like some support to tackle that long overdue creative project that you’ve been promising yourself to start or finish, I am starting a new Creativity Coaching group in January, which has a few places left. Or maybe the Shamanic path has pulled you for some time and you would like to find out more? Then send me a line or two at evaweaver@talk21.com or visit me at the Lewes Wellbeing Fest on the 11th of January where I will give a talk about Creativity Coaching. And please read on! I look forward to hearing from you!
With warmest wishes! Eva

Introduction to Shamanism for Arts Therapists
as part of Roehampton University ‘Lets Engage’ CPD Programme.
on Saturday 21st of February 09 10.30-4.30pm £80
for more info and to book , click here
This one-day CPD course offers an introduction to the ancient spiritual practice of Shamanism and raises questions about the relevance of its concepts for our practice as Arts Therapists today. Space is offered for reflection, discussion and some practical exploration
Similarities and overlaps between Arts Therapies approaches and shamanic work and experience will be explored as well as clear differences. Besides an introduction to Core Shamanism, the workshop will include case material from Art Therapy practice in the field of Mental Health as well as from my experience as a shamanic practitioner and as a Performance Artist. The workshop does not require any previous knowledge of shamanism.
Over the past few years Shamanism has received a lot of interest from various areas, including health practitioners, therapists and artists. Shamanism is the oldest spiritual path known; it holds a world-view that all things are connected and that everything that exists has a living spirit. Shamanism is a path of the heart, which helps us to connect more deeply and fully with ourselves, with other people, nature and spirit-helpers/ guides in various forms through the way of the ‘shamanic journey’ in which the practitioner asks for help, guidance and knowledge and healing.
What can we, as Arts Therapists learn from Shamanism and are Arts Therapists really ‘modern day shamans’ as Shaun McNiff suggests?
