Over the past few years Shamanism has received a lot of interest from various areas, including health practitioners, therapists and artists.

Shamanism is the oldest spiritual path known; it holds a world-view that all things are connected and that everything that exists has a living spirit.

Shamanism is a path of the heart, which helps us to connect more deeply and fully with ourselves, with other people, nature and spirit-helpers/ guides in various forms through the way of the ‘shamanic journey’ in which the practitioner asks for help, guidance and knowledge and healing.

What can we, as Health Professional learn from Shamanism, it’s view on illness and health, soul- loss and soul retrieval?

This one-day workshop offers an introduction to the ancient spiritual practice of Shamanism and raises questions about the relevance of its concepts for our practice as Health Professionals today. Space is offered for reflection, discussion and some practical exploration.

Besides theoretical presentations we will also work with creative media and there is an opportunity to experience a short shamanic journey (as well as the possibility to opt out of this if one feels not comfortable).

Similarities and overlaps between Arts Therapies approaches and shamanic work  and experience will be explored as well as clear differences. Besides an introduction to Core Shamanism, the workshop will include case material from Art Therapy practice in the field of Mental Health as well as from my experience as a shamanic practitioner in private practice.

The workshop does not require any previous knowledge of Shamanism.

‘MASK OF POWER’-

a SHAMANIC CREATIVITY RETREAT

for women at Chymorgen, Cornwall

from 9-12th of April 2010

This retreat offers a safe and exciting space to dive fully into the centre of your

creativity to celebrate your unique expressions through the ancient practice of the shamanic journey, mask- work, ritual ,voice and song, creative media such as collage, writing, clay and especially working closely with and in nature such as at local stone circles and the coast.

The ‘MASK OF POWER’ Creativity retreat will particularly focus on mask-work as a way to strengthen us in our creative expression and personal power and to connect deeply with our creativity and our spirit helpers.

We will be working with the special energy of spring and of this magical place

to support you to

•strengthen the connection to our creative power;

•sensitively work with possible obstacles and hesitations we might encounter;

•explore tools to ground creativity in our lives and establish daily practice;

•make space to honour, celebrate and affirm our unique creative talents and expressions within a circle of women.

On this retreat shamanic journeys  will be at the core of our exploration and will guide us in this process. The journeys may include a journey to the ‘spirit of creativity’ to enquire how we can connect more deeply with our creative dreams and ambitions; how to deal with possible obstacles and a journey to find a daily ritual to honour our creativity and to create our ‘mask of power’.

We will go on a ‘walk with intention’  and there will be space and free time to enjoy the beautiful environment in and around Chymorgen which is only ten minutes from the gorgeous coastal path with stunning views and many ancient stone circles nearby.

Delicious, locally sourced vegetarian food and accommodation n beautiful twin rooms.

specifically with issues around creativity and creating.

At the core of this group we will be working with shamanic journeying to support, nurture, celebrate, deepen and honour our creativity and our personal creative projects.

Coaching techniques and stimulating coaching exercises will complement this exploration and will help us integrate the wisdom, help, healing and advise we receive through the shamanic journey. There will also be space to directly work on a particular individual project of any medium throughout the course of the group.

Each evening will explore a particular issue and introduce a creative medium, including writing, collage, painting, mask-work and voice.

All art materials will be provided.

A typical session might include a brief check in, a shamanic journey and drawing out of the teaching from the journey; a coaching exercise and/or some time to work on a personal creative project as well as time to share and reflect.

Besides themes such as time-management, motivation, balance etc we will look at:

• how to work with possible obstacle and overcome or heal these, enlisting the support of our spirit helpers;

• a journey to connect with the spirit of our creativity;

• Finding tools to keep our creating firmly and regularly rooted in our everyday lives;

• Journeys to the spirit of a particular project to ask for guidance, help and support;

‘The Other Face-
an Introduction to Therapeutic Mask Work’
a one day course at Roehampton University,
as part of the ‘Lets Engage Programme’
on 26th of February 10am- 4pm

‘Man is least himself when he talks in his own person.
Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth’ Oscar Wilde

This workshop is both theoretical and experiential and aims to
 give participants an introduction into the potential of mask-work
in self-development and therapy.
Masks have fascinated people for thousands of years - from the
use of masks in shamanism, carnival to theatre and therapy,
masks have been recognised as mysterious and potent objects
of transformation, play and healing. Mask-work is a powerful
and playful way to explore aspects of the self and to look
behind the ‘masks of everyday life.’
Masks invite us to connect or re-connect with our creativity and
 with parts of ourselves that have been lying hidden, dormant or forgotten:
aspects that might want to be recognised, brought to light and
‘show their faces.’
An overview over the origin of masks and the historical, anthropological,
spiritual and creative use of masks will be given and the use of masks
with a variety of clients will be presented. This includes visual
and case-material from various projects.
The workshop will give opportunity for discussion and various mask-making
techniques can be tried out such as creating masks from clay, plaster-of-Paris,
 as well as natural and everyday /’junk’ materials will be introduced.
We will look at work with masks in the framework of therapy, counselling
and self-development, its varied uses and possible dangers and limitations.
The workshop does not require any previous experience of working with masks nor any artistic experience.
Different ways of connecting with the made masks and ways to ‘get into’ or ‘behind the mask’ will be introduced.
